Hello Fellow Renegades,

We were at the NE Git together and had many requests for photo's of our Cheoy Lee which we stupidly did not bring with us. I am taking this oppportunity to show everyone our project boat. I must make this clear that Juli and I could have bought a "done" boat and gone sailing this year but we really wanted a project to work on for several years. We wanted a boat to cruise on, a boat in solid but in bad cosmetic shape. We love to work together on stuff like this, we built our own house together 6 years ago and we loved it.

So here we go, we purchased a 1977 Cheoy Lee 41 Ketch. We loved the boat from the moment we saw it. We loved the layout down below, the Ketch rig, the "master suite". She is not a fast boat, we knew that. We are never in a rush sailing, we wanted comfort, we wanted a traditional looking boat, a boat we would be proud of seeing it from a distance.

Now here we are today.

3 coats of Flag Blue awlgrip and 2 clear coats.

Added a Bowsprit, can carry and deploy two anchors - A 44lb Bruce and a 35lb CQR.

Decks have been completley removed, sealed, primed and ready for non-skid ( sometime next year)

I'll keep the pictures coming, the short list for this spring and summer.

Install 7 new port lights - New found Metals, I have these I just need to put them in.
Install Cape Horn Wind Vane - on order - 8 weeks
Install new Velvet Drive tranny
PSS shaft seal, stuffing box etc.
4 Blade feathering Vari Prop - on order
Mount main sheet traveller on Cabin top
Install Newport deisel heater ( I have this from ebay)
Paint the Cabin top
Paint the bottom- green

Duncan,

I sanded off the old paint and some of the gelcoat (on purpose) I spent 3-4 months on it almost every day. I painted it with 2 coats of Interlux epoxy barrier coat primer and final sanded with 220. It was a shit load of work but now it looks like glass. I did the hull first strictly for the thrill of it each time I walk into the boat shed and see it, I can almost see it sailing in my head. But then I walk on deck and go "Oh Shit!".

Love working on it! It's the adventure.

Russell,

Juli and I thought about painting it but after applying the primer which is very similar to Awlgrip we decided that we could not keep a wet edge on such a wide surface and opted to have a friend of mine spray her. I don't regret the decision at all.

Thanks for the kind words. I have to tell you a quick story, Juli and I built our house 6 years ago. For 2 years before we started, I was collecting all the materials I needed off the internet. Lumber, windows, toilets, skylights, you name it. We had a dinner party with some new friends one night and I was sowing all this stuff to one of the husbands. 3 years later we had our house warming party and this husband stood up and told how I had shown him all this stuff years before and he had said to himself "Yeh - this guys going to build a house out of this stuff when monkeys fly out my ass" and he then raised his glass and said "Monkeys are flying out of my ass!"

Yes I am crazy, Juli knows I'm crazy but somehow we pull this shit off.

A couple of my new chainplates which arrived yesterday. I have 14 in all I am replacing. I had them made out of 316 flat stock and have polished them with a high speed grinder and a polishing wheel with stainless ruge. The old ones are really, really bad looking. I had one quote of 3,800 for the plates plus 900 to polish these from a local rigger. Had them made at a small machine shop for 1,200 cash and I am doing the rest myself.

Just out of curiosity what are the measumements of the chainplate that you show. As I said on the polishing thread I need to ask Bill if he would be interested in doing work for people and I would like to see where he would be on price.

5/16 thick, 2" wide, 17" long for the larger one.
